Squirrels may be a difficult prey but that was the point. Clay being the experienced predator that he is managed to catch one, the distraction on consuming the squirrel is why he didn't notice the humans scent sooner. He stops mid bite and crouches lower behind the bushes trying to keep her from seeing him.
