Squirrels may be a difficult prey but that was the point. Clay being the experienced predator that he is managed to catch one, the distraction on consuming the squirrel is why he didn't notice the humans scent sooner. He stops mid bite and crouches lower behind the bushes trying to keep her from seeing him.
When he see's the McDonald's bag he is taken back to when Jeremy used to bring him burgers in the Bayou. The warm thoughts almost overshadowing his concern over his current predicament.
